Fine Art Quilts By Carla A. White

Welcome to Glowbirdy Quilts

My name is Carla A. White and I make brightly colored, realistic art quilts of birds, animals, flowers, landscapes and anything else related to nature.  The beauty of the Vermont countryside is always a great source of inspiration.  I take numerous photographs on my daily walks in the woods and some of these become the basis of my art quilts.  The gorgeous textures and three-dimensionality of the natural world are achieved with raw-edge applique; heavy quilting; the use of paints, inks and embellishments; and by lifting elements above the surface of the quilt.  I like to make beautiful quilts that make myself and my audience smile and feel delighted.

My company name, Glowbirdy Quilts, comes from my previous career as a radiological health specialist (glowing) and because I had many cockatiels (birds) at that time.

Please explore my nature inspired art quilts.

I am passionate about making colorful, realistic art quilts of birds, animals, flowers, landscapes, and anything else related to the natural world.  I like to make beautiful and delightful art quilts to attract the viewer and to draw them in to see the details.

My art quilts are inspired by and created from photographs I have taken on my travels, on my daily walks in the woods and in my gardens.  I trace a simple, small sketch of a photograph and then enlarge it to the desired size for construction.  This is just a general plan which may change as my work progresses.   I often change fabrics and their placement in the design if they don’t seem right for the composition.

I create the gorgeous textures and three-dimensionality of the natural world with hand-dyed fabrics, batik and batik-like cotton fabrics, and other fabrics such as silk, tulle, and organza.  These fabrics are ironed to double-sided fusible web, then cut into the leaves, petals, feathers, etc. and applied to the background.  Even more depth is created with heavy quilting; the use of paints, inks, pencils, and embellishments; and lifting elements above the surface of the quilt with layers of felt.

I make my colorful art quilts during the long, cold, gray winters of Vermont to remind myself of the warmer months to come.  Summers are pretty much dedicated to gardening, walking in the woods, and taking tons of photographs.
